Deciding on a college major can be hard, especially if you’re a first-generation student, or nothing jumps out at you at first. That’s why here at Eastern, we try to make it a little easier on you. Our UACDC offers many opportunities to explore majors/minors that actually interest you and will work well with your personality traits. With over 200 majors/minors, there is a lot to choose from. To make it easier, we went through our catalog and picked out 12 unique/growing majors here at EMU for you to check out!

College: College of Health and Human Services

Credit Hours: 54 hours (BS) & 40 hours (MATR)


Athletic Training is a 5-year program. The first three years are spent earning an undergraduate bachelor's degree in science, followed by two years of graduate school, with admission to the program, to earn a Master of Athletic training degree. Through this program, students will learn skills relative to injury prevention, management, and rehabilitation. Students will engage in hands-on learning, and experience working with EMU athletics, local high schools, and sports medicine clinics. All of this is done to reach the goal of becoming a certified athletic trainer.

If you’ve ever dreamed of becoming a pilot, this program is for you. Our Aviation Flight Technology program prepares students for entry-level pilot positions, allowing them to earn their private pilot, commercial pilot, and certified flight instructor certificates all while in college. On top of this, students earn their instrument, complex, high-performance, and multi-engine ratings. We worked with Crosswinds Aviation across 4 different locations to allow our students to start flying as early as their first semester.

This program is great for students looking for careers in airport management, operations, air traffic control, and many of the business elements in the aviation industry. The coursework provides a strong foundation in areas of passenger safety, airline operations, industry trends, etc. Through this program, students can prepare to be an FAA-certified aircraft dispatcher. You can choose from different concentrations: business or dispatch. A General Business Minor is required for this program.

This program is great for students with a passion for working with children from birth to age 5. The coursework includes subjects such as the development of young children, appropriate learning experiences, and the importance of developing strong relationships with young children and families. It prepares students to work in fields such as Great Start Readiness Programs, Head Start programs, or agencies that advocate for children/families.

Living in a modern world, cybersecurity is an important field. This program is designed to prepare students to protect accounts and information in multiple different sectors, branching from industry to government networks. As of 2020, program enrollment was only 206 students, allowing for more 1-on-1 education opportunities. It is accredited by the ABET-CAC. Students learn many skills such as cybersecurity threat/risk evaluation, network/digital forensics, and even penetration testing.

Geotourism is so much more than flights and vacation getaways, but instead the study and preservation of a place’s environment, culture, etc., and most importantly, its relationship with the people who visit it. Students in the Geotourism and Historic Preservation Program have the opportunities to develop tourism education, research, or even become leaders in tourism initiatives. If they chose, students can also continue their education in EMU’s award-winning Masters of Historic Preservation Program.

The Simulation, Animation, and Gaming Program is a great opportunity for students who are passionate about animation and game creation. In this program, students learn a wide range of skills, such as art, programming, creative writing, and story development. The coursework focuses on modeling, rigging, animation, lighting, and camera work in the 3-dimensional realm. At Eastern, this program ranks in the top 10 affordable bachelor degrees in Animation Programs. Students use this degree to go work in the fields of graphic design, animation, character designer, storyboard assistant, and many more!

Major: TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) [BA]

TESOL is a great program for students who are passionate about education and language. The program focuses on preparing students to teach English to those who are not native speakers of the language. It is an accredited program and is one of the smaller department’s on Eastern’s campus with about 29 students having a declared major or minor in TESOL during the Winter 2021 semester. It is very service learning-oriented. Students can not only expect to do an internship within the program but also will be doing hands-on work within classrooms by making lesson plans, teaching, doing literacy support work, and volunteering. There are two pathways: K-12 education or adult education. A minor is required.

New to Eastern for the Fall 2021 semester, our Civil Engineering program provides students the opportunity to study and master at least four aspects of the field including, but not limited to: Structural Analysis and Design, Transportation Engineering, Construction Engineering and Management, Water and Wastewater Engineering, Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering, and Pavement and Materials Engineering. By the end of their undergraduate career, our Civil Engineering students’ education ends with a final capstone design experience, utilizing all learned experiences to solve unique engineering design problems.

A new program at Eastern come Fall 2021, our Musical Theatre program offers students the intense training necessary to succeed in the industry. Acceptance into this program is based on an audition, consisting of a 16-bar cut of a musical theatre song, a 60-second monologue, and a short dance combination. This program provides hands-on experience in singing, acting, dancing while maintaining each through day-to-day practices.

Our Arts and Entertainment Management offers education in various areas of the arts, in addition to the research and marketing aspects that lead to success. With a required minor in either management, marketing, or entrepreneurship, students can explore the world of the arts, while focusing their talents on the management side of things. Students are given the opportunity to seek out two internships, attend field trips, and so much more to gain practical experience in the field.

Credit Hours: 60 hours (3 concentrations, 20 hours each)


If none of our current 200+ majors fit your needs, or maybe a few of them do, Individualized Studies may be the right path for you! Those interested in this program must schedule a consultation with the UACDC in order to find the right combination of concentrations for them. Students must also have at least 60 completed credit hours before scheduling this consultation. This program allows students to fully take advantage of every program offered, while also uniquely tailoring their undergraduate experience to them.
