Ypsilanti “Ypsi” is a town that is loved by students throughout EMU. The strong community is felt both on and off-campus. Many love Ypsi for the people, their local businesses in the area are also a point of pride among the students and the community. Listed here is a collection of the top 10 restaurants, businesses, and other places to visit in the Ypsi area (collected by your favorite EMU tour guides).
Restaurants:
1. Tower Inn Cafe

Beloved by many Eastern Students, Tower Inn is located just off campus making it convenient for students living on campus. While known for their pizza, they have a large menu to choose from. Tower Inn also offers half-off appetizer times for many items on their menu, making it a great place to dine out on a budget. A fan favorite highlight from past years are the events offered throughout the week, specifically karaoke on Thursday. (Note: Due to Covid, these events have been paused for staff and customer safety). Tower offers take-out and outside dining, for socially distanced dining options.
2. Cultivate Coffee and Tap House

Cultivate is a student favorite here at EMU if you’re looking for a great coffee house, snacks, study spot, or a place to hang with friends. Cultivate offers a unique menu for in-store and to-go options. During the warmer months, Cultivate offers outdoor seating (also offered with heaters during the colder months). Their colorful mural outside serves as a nice background for any Instagram opportunities.

Located in DownTown Ypsilanti, Go! is just a quick trip from campus, making it convenient for students on and off-campus.
4. Maíz

The fan-favorite spot for Taco Tuesdays, Maíz is definitely an EMU and Ypsi favorite. Their Tuesday $2 tacos make this the perfect spot for carry-out, outdoor, or indoor dining. In past years, Maíz has held different events and parties complete with performances and dancing. If you’re looking for a little more than tacos, you’re also covered. Maíz has a strong menu with multiple options for Tuesdays or any other day of the week. If you’re looking to vamp up your meal planning, Maíz recently started weekly meal kits where you can order prepped ingredients to bring the restaurant to your kitchen.
